What is Mazda Adaptive Front-Lighting System?

New Mazda vehicles offer some truly incredible technology. From impressive safety systems like Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning to convenience features like Mazda Adaptive Cruise Control, you can be sure you are always getting the most cutting-edge technology in your new Mazda. One of these great new features is the Mazda Adaptive Front-Lighting System, or AFS for short. So what is the Mazda Adaptive Front Lighting System exactly? Well, it is a high-tech lighting system designed to make night driving a whole lot safer. Lights are essential when driving at night and the AFS system ensures drivers always have a well-illuminated field of view, even if conditions change.

When the lights are on, AFS can change the distribution of light to fit whatever the driving situation requires, always ensuring the light distribution is optimized for the specific driving conditions of that moment. AFS will analyze speed and steering to predict exactly what direction the car is moving and it will automatically direct the lights toward the direction of travel to better illuminate the roadway. This helps drivers see further at night by aiming the headlights in the most ideal direction, allowing the light to travel a further distance. This is an incredible improvement over typical headlights that are stationary and may be directed in a less-ideal direction. AFS even improves visibility when there’s a change in driving conditions, like an upcoming curve or intersection.Mazda Adaptive Front-Lighting System Mazda 6

The Adaptive Front-Lighting System also has an auto-leveling function, which keeps an even distribution of light across the field of view even if driving conditions change. Whether the vehicle is weighted down in the back, causing the front end to aim slightly upward, or the vehicle is moving over uneven terrain, AFS will keep the light level at all times. The auto-leveling function also helps drivers traveling in the opposite direction see better by preventing the bright lights from flashing in their eyes.

With AFS, drivers will be able to see much better at night and in inclement weather, preventing potential accidents due to a poor field of view. AFS is found in new Mazda vehicles like the 2016 Mazda CX-5 and 2016 Mazda 6.
