We often think that only larger vehicles can handle towing. While it’s true that large SUVs and trucks can certainly tow more weight, that doesn’t mean that a compact crossover like the 2019 Mazda CX-5 can’t be capable as well. Learn more about the towing power of this stylish and efficient crossover SUV.
How much can the 2019 Mazda CX-5 tow?
When properly equipped, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 lbs. By “properly equipped”, we mean a couple things. First, you need to have the right trailer hitch attached to the rear of the vehicle. Also, to achieve a maximum trailer weight of 2,000 lbs., you will need more torque than the base engine produces. The Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels all come with a SKYACTIV®-G inline four-cylinder engine that produces 186 pound-foot of torque. To achieve the maximum towing capacity, you would be wise to opt for the new turbocharged engine which puts out 310 pound-foot of torque.
2019 Mazda CX-5 turbocharged engine specifications
All-new for the 2019 model year is a turbocharged engine option, which is something drivers have been coveting for years. We saw the 2018 Mazdas6 finally get turbocharged and it has been wildly successful. Well, that same engine is now standard on the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models. This new option is a 250-horsepower, 2.5-liter SKYACTIV®-G I4 engine with dynamic pressure turbo. When you combine the sweet elegance of the Mazda CX-5 with 250 horsepower, you get something truly special.
